Heel pain is a very common and often observed problem in the people of India. Plantar fasciitis is the foremost cause of heel pain, which typically occurs in the under side of the heel or just behind it. Plantar fasciitis is basically an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a strong bowstring like ligament that runs from the tip of the toe to the heel bone (calcaneum). The pain typically occurs due to over stretching of the fascia near the heel bone. Mostly conservatively treated in the form of night splints ,orthotics and physiotherapy. Rarely injections can also be used to treat this condition but very cautiously. If the pain and the fasciitis persist surgical intervention maybe required. Surgery can be done endoscopically or by open release of the fascia.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Several factors can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis, including

  • Excessive foot strain from standing, walking, or running for long durations
  • Obesity, which puts extra pressure on the foot arch
  • Improper footwear with poor arch support
  • Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Age (commonly seen in the 40–60 age group)

Available Treatment Options

  • Rest and Ice Application
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Custom Orthotic Insoles or Arch Supports
  • Physiotherapy including Ultrasound & Stretching Techniques
  • Steroid Injections (if pain is persistent)
  • Shockwave Therapy
  • Surgical intervention in rare and chronic cases
